The government on June 4 set aside a Rs142 crore package to construct bridges across the Otteri Nullah and the Puzhal surplus channel besides the long pending Elephant Gate Road rail over bridge (ROB).
In the assembly, Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani announced the government would build three causeways across the surplus channel taking water out of the Puzhal lake. “The neighbourhoods in Manali were affected during the 2015 floods as land bridges went under water. Hence, it is proposed to build three causeways at Amullaivoyal, Vadaperumbakkam and Burma Nagar at Rs44.25 crore,” Velumani said.
Velumani announced a similar flood impact project across the Otteri Nullah, where the existing low-level bridge linking Cooks Road and Dr Ambedkar Road across the Otteri Nullah, will make way for a new high bridge. The government will spend Rs67.76 crore to demolish the existing structure before constructing the new bridge, the minister said.
Velumani added the city corporation will spend Rs30 crore to widen a 950m long stretch of the Chennai-Konnur High Road from its current width of 12 m.
The minister also set aside Rs30 crore as corpus for Chennai corporation to take up construction of a new ROB at Elephant Gate Road.
