One of the most important residential locations in the city, Velachery and Pallikaranai easily connects to the IT hub and also to the bustling areas of Besant Nagar and Adyar. In the last decade, the area has seen exponential growth in terms of residential and commercial development, which eventually brought in civic and social infrastructure to the area.
In recent times though, massive vehicular population coupled with growing number of residents in the area have led to the congestion of important parts of Velachery. The arterial junctions, near Vijayanagar bus stand and Velachery Bypass Road connecting to Tambaram, are perennially choked with people and motorists. Even more so, in the last couple of years, due to the work on flyover construction and stormwater drains.
Twin flyover
Work for the ambitious twin flyover project started in 2015, with the first level that intends to connect the Velachery Bypass Road to the road towards Tambaram and the second level flyover that will connect the Taramani Link Road and the Velachery Bypass Road. But there has been a constant delay with the construction of it. The bridge is an extensive one, with two levels, hence it is taking more time to complete.
When completed, this flyover will be a boon. People travelling under the flyover also will not have any problem and the area will get decongested, especially near Vijayanagar bus stand, which is a nightmare now.
Stormwater Drains
Yet another civic project is the stormwater drains. When completed, they will be of immense help to an area like Velachery and surrounding areas that were badly affected in the floods a few years ago. Unfortunately, before that comes the digging of roads for the laying of pipes, which means that the congested roads are further narrowed.
After the 2015 floods, there was a crying need for efficient stormwater drains in the area. This is a huge project. here is also the added problem of carefully clearing the power cables and other cables, and they also have to overcome the problem of not disturbing the existing sewer/drain pipes before laying out the drains. Almost 90 per cent of the work is complete and it can definitely reduce the effect of the floods in the area.
